Dental emergencies can happen to anyone at any time. While some dental emergencies can be treated at home, others require the help of a dentist. If you are experiencing a dental emergency and need to see an emergency dentist in a hurry, call our office today, and we will do everything we can to help you get in and see our dentist.

Who Is an Emergency Dentist?

An emergency dentist is a dentist who treats oral and dental health emergencies.

What Are Dental Emergencies?

Some dental problems can progress very quickly. If you have one of the following dental emergencies, our dentist may recommend that you come to our office for treatment.

  • Knocked-out teeth:Immediately rinse the tooth with water and place it back in the socket. Then go directly to our office for treatment. It is important to place the tooth back in the socket within 30 minutes of it becoming dislodged. If a tooth is not reinserted into the socket, it may be difficult to reattach later on.
  • Broken or cracked tooth:The area can become infected if not treated right away.
  • Dental abscess:An abscessed tooth is extremely painful and requires immediate treatment.
  • Severe toothache: Most toothaches can be treated at home, but if your toothache cannot be relieved by over-the-counter pain medications, call us immediately. Severe toothaches that do not subside after being treated may require emergency dental care.
  • Lost filling: If you lose a metal or composite filling from your tooth, rinse the area with water and see your dentist as soon as possible for repair or replacement.
  • Damage or injury:Any damage or injury to your teeth can lead to infection and cavities. See us immediately if your teeth are injured or broken.

What Should I Do if I Have a Dental Emergency?

If you have a dental emergency, it's important to stay calm. While dental emergencies can be upsetting, there are a few things you can do to reduce your discomfort before your appointment with our emergency dentist.

  • If your tooth has been knocked out, you should attempt to locate it. You should rinse the tooth with lukewarm water, but avoid scrubbing the tooth. If you can, try to place the tooth back in its socket. If placing the tooth back in its socket is not possible, you should store it in saliva or milk to keep it moist.
  • If you have a toothache, you should rinse your mouth with water and apply a cold compress to your face. If your pain persists, you may take over-the-counter pain medication. If your toothache is the result of a dental infection, you should call your dentist immediately.
  • If your mouth hurts, avoid hot, spicy, or acidic foods and beverages until the pain subsides. These foods can make your pain worse because they irritate your mouth tissues and trigger inflammation. If you have a sore throat associated with your dental problem, it is best to avoid drinking anything hot or cold for several days until the discomfort subsides.
